EXPERIMENTS WITH CARD BOARDS, PLASTIC BAGS AND OBLIQUE STRATEGIES

I have done these work in MA Fashion-Semester A.
It's a part of module "Creative Practice" .I have done lot of Experiments using variety of material.
I feel Experiments are one of the strongest point in any creative work to get positive outcome.
I did that using reclaimed card boards, plastic bags and foam boards.
I got an idea about card boards when we did workshop molding Jersey fabric and PVA.

I have used reclaimed card boards in my work. When i was cutting circles from card boards, there
were some remaining shapes from them and i found those interesting.
It looks like abstract piece of work. I tried to put them in such a way and took images
from different angles. Minimal use of colors look very interesting.
My all the experiments from the beginning have been done using same concept of "Unusual Placement"

Inner view

I cut these circular shapes from card boards and put them together with remaining cards and clicked
images from different angles and dimensions which shows the distance between them. They are
very close to each other but because of photography it seems like they are very far from each other.

To make this structure i put the slashes on circles to fix them in to each other.
It's 3D piece of work. Unusual Fonts with Red and Blue enhances the Beauty of Abstract Piece.
It's miniature of my final piece of work i'm going to present it in a bigger form using variety of
techniques.

This texture was made by Plastic bags and cotton. When i had a tutorial with Sian- (my program Leader for Creative Practice), we were discussing about variety of materials and suddenly i got an idea  of playing with Plastic. I started searching different variety in plastic bags as well as colors. Plastic bags had been cut and put together on a cardboard and put in grill machine to proceed. After few seconds plastic got melted and created a very beautiful texture which fells like velvet when we touch it. I put cotton among the pieces of plastic bags. Half burnt cotton enhances the beauty of the whole texture.

I made this texture with the same technique as above but  foil had been added in with
black and pink plastic bags.

I have used plastic bags with different brand/company Logos and caption on it.
Because of the texture, unusual remaining fonts looks very eye catchy.

This picture was taken at the time of Professional photo shoot. It's original color is Navy blue and White.
In actual it gives feel like Velvet Fabric.

These samples were created from Card boards and Foam Boards. Slant Cutting Technique has been used to cut the layers in such a way. I got an inspiration from visit at Material Lab. One Butterfly made using this technique. I decided to use that in my work and started experimenting by making layers of card boards and foam and cut those using slant cutting technique. For this particular technique i have used reclaimed card boxes because each layer has got a wavy texture in between which gives really beautiful effect when we cut many layers together as we can see that here in this image. Normal Card board won't create this effect.

Original Piece from Material Lab:

My Work

This piece of work is just a part of my experiment. I wanted to show the colors behind transparent layers as it is in this first images. I wanted to give the same feel and it was my first trial but used different technique. The original piece of work has thicker layer as well as pastel shades in it but in my piece or work it is different. It is very thin layer of card board and tracing paper. I have applied acrylic colors on card board and put another layer of tracing paper on it and gave pressure and motion of hand to merge colors with each other.

My Work

I made 3 samples using different colors. Each of them give different effect.

Minimal use of colors and more which space.

OBLIQUE  STRATEGIES

Here are some of the Oblique Strategies i have used.
The method of using them was very different. Each student had to pass their original work to another student and had to apply strategies given to them. It was very interesting method of learning new things. For the first round,we need to take one chit for name from Hat and for second round we need to take another one for Oblique Strategy. So we need to apply strategy on the work of another student given to us.

In my First round i got Airoshark made by one of my mate and my Oblique strategy was
"Is anybody want   it" So though very hard as i was given just the skeleton of airoshark.
After a long research i though of making skin layer of shark and to decorate it in such way as my strategy was reflecting. I decided to use colorful papers in side and white coating outside. You can see the process from images i have taken at the time of making this piece. Colorful craft papers were been cut, mixed and crushed.

In side colorful papers.

Mixed and Crushed Papers

This is the just a skeleton of Airoshark which had been given to me and i have applied strategy on it.

I have used wadding to create skin for shark.

But before that i put all colored papers in side the Shark and covered it with cling Film to make it much more stable as bottom layer.

Then I started covering it with wadding which was quite difficult because of shapes. so i cut and pasted it to cover all the shapes. I have used colored papers in between cling film and wadding so that it could be visible.

I kept the layer much more thinner so colors and can be visible.

This is the final Piece of Work.

These images have been taken with lights and from different angles.

Because of lights the layer of colored papers looks like Veins in the body.

The main concept behind my thoughts is that i wanted to make it much more interesting as my strategy was telling me. I used wadding as upper layer and colorful papers as inside because i wanted it to be visible so i put lights on it from different ways to make it visible and take images from different dimensions.

This strategy was  "Use a Scalpel"
I got a oval shaped wire work and had to do something using scalpel.
At the beginning of Oblique Strategies i was not sure about the presentation of the final work.
So i used scalpel to break the wires but it was very difficult to break it with scalpel. Wires were so hard to break it down. I broke the wires and reform it in such a way to it could be use as a wall piece.
After making it seemed like the Sun and it's rays and could be used as a show piece as well as lamp if we put bulb in middle of the wire piece.

This is another Oblique Strategy.

"Disconnect from Desire"
I got a plaster mask and had to apply oblique strategy on it. I found that mask very simple and unattractive.
I broke both the words and started thinking of  each phrase. Disconnect has very simple meaning so i thought about my desire. And my desire was to make the mask much more interesting. I found a perfect image and wanted to apply digitally on the mask. The thought behind the whole concept was that the will keep rotating in 360 degree and image projecting through projector will remain constant. So when image reflect on the front of the mask it would create something interesting which is my desire but because of the rotation, mask will not stay constant and it will disconnect from my desire.

This strategy was "Discover your recipes and abandon them"
I got the paper work which was already went through the oblique strategy and i had to apply another 1 on it. This time the concept of presentation was much more clear than before. I took pictures of original work given to me. I was taking pictures in sun light and in different ways like laying them, hanging in different ways. At that time because of sunlight i got beautiful shadows/reflection of the paper on the white card board and liked it so much as well as i put the paper in front of sunlight and got different views from both the sides and decided to use it in my strategy.

Original Images

I put the paper in front of sun light from backside which looks like this from front view.
The print of colorful paper comes out because of the sunlight and paper piece on the top goes darker.

Different dimensions

I inspired by this image to play with shadow and reflection as well as got an idea of applying lights from both front and back sides.

Original Image of work

As my strategy telling me i started thinking about my own Recipes of work.
I like to work with Rhythm. Things done with Radiation and Gradation attracts me more. Colorful things interest me and i like to observe them. But i have to abandon my recipes and made something completely new that i have ever done before. That's why i decided to use minimal colors in my work which i usually don't prefer to do and printed off black n which prints of work as well as 2 -3 color prints to put them randomly in the rows of papers. I set them in such a way which does not look like a proper rhythm.

I tied all the papers with black string and hang them.

In this image i have applied light from front side and got this view.

I actually want to show this that by applying lights from front side we got the different view and different from back side.
This is the rear view.

Experiments for Final Piece Of Work

I'm going to continue with my original work of card board. In my original work i have used reclaimed card boards with fonts on it. But after that i learnt Oblique strategies as well as final cut pro and got to know about variety techniques. I have decided to use printing at first. So i got plain card boards and i did printing on it using words and numeric. Texts are very popular that we can see everyday in London like numbers of buses, names of Stations as well as i also used some numeric which were there in my original work. I did that first on Paper and that on cardboard.

I cut out circles and joined them. I did this quick sample just to see which technique would be better to join circle for final piece. I actually wanted ti see how much gap and how many slashes required on each circle.
